MOSCOW (AP) – The country’s president said that Azerbaijan forces have taken control of the strategically important city of Shiony in Nagorno-Karbakh, where war with Armenia lasted for more than a month.
In an address to the nation, using the Azerbaijan version of the city’s name, President Ilham Aliyev said, “Shusha is ours – Karabakh is ours,”.
Shushi is of significant military value as it is located approximately 10 kilometers (6 mi) south of the region’s capital, Stefancart, and along the main road connecting Nagorno-Karbakh to Armenia.
Nagorno-Karbakh is within Azerbaijan, but has been under the control of local ethnic Armenian forces supported by Armenia since 1994. The latest outbreak of fighting began on September 27 and has left hundreds – if not thousands – dead.
Aliyev vowed to continue fighting until Armenia withdrew from the area.
