Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Sri Lankan police will strictly enforce the mask and social security requirements starting on Monday and punish violators as other anti-virus measures are eased to ease the economic pain.
Police spokesman Ajit Rohan said that the police have arrested 120 people during the last 10 days for wearing face masks in public places and failing to maintain social distance. The coronavirus rules introduced last month resulted in a $ 54 fine, six months imprisonment or both.
“From today onwards, we will strictly enforce this law and arrest those who defy these rules.”
Passenger trains started operating after about two weeks and the government lifted the curfew which was effective in the capital Colombo and its suburbs. Only pockets where infection is high will be subject to isolation, in which no one is allowed to enter or leave the area.
The government said that even though the risk of coronavirus has not reduced, the region should be opened up because the economy cannot stop continuously.
