Not telemedicine Future – It is now. Technology has been actively changing the way consumers care for years. Major health care systems recognize the cost and benefits of the latest mobile apps available for remote patient monitoring, virtual doctor visits, disease management or chronic disease management.
Panelist in US News Hospital of Tomorrow Conference Attendees in the District of Columbia reported that telemedicine is not just an add-on form of health care, but an essential component that is advancing. Telemedicine has the opportunity to provide health care providers and consumers with:
- Less hospitalization
- Life saving diagnosis and treatment
- Lower costs
- Better care
- Doctor-patient busyness in rural areas

At Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, ophthalmologist Drs. Julia A. Haller says that telemedicine has been the focal point of care for more than 15 years.
“Far-home surveillance is already with us in ophthalmology, and it’s going to be increasingly important,” says Heller, adding that hospitals now identify patients most at risk for progression to blindness outside of the clinic Is working to of myVisionTrack and ForeseeHome.
The greatest value of telemedicine is probably the cost of care, Drs. Andrew R. Says Watson, vice president of international and medical director of telemedicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Connection between doctor and patient is still important, he says. Online patient portals are providing the transfer of communication between doctors and patients once, similar to old-time house call doctors.
“We see patient portals as an absolutely critical route to reach consumers,” says Watson. “It’s bringing healthcare back to patients, back to its roots.”
