Salt Lock City (AP) – Tiny shrimp showing such a large number of eggs UtahThe Great Salt Lake is that parts of the lake are covered with an oil slick.
The cold weather in the fall or winter causes the lake’s small salty shrimp to produce eggs, called cysts. When the conditions are fine this year, the eggs come together in huge masses.
Photographs from Great Salt Lake State Park and Marina show a vortex, brown moss on the water west of Salt Lake City.
When the weather warms up, the eggs are expected to hatch and continue their life cycle. Commercial boats are known as “sea monkeys” that are sold to fish farms, harvesting eggs raised in adult shrimp.
According to the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program, brine shrimp also feed millions of birds of some 300 species that, according to the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program, breed in the Great Salt Lake.
