Philadelphia (AP) – Jaylen Hurts gave the Philadelphia Eagles more than just a spark. He helped win.
Hurts ran for 106 yards and threw for 167 more a touchdown, Miles Sanders ran for 115 yards and had a pair of scores and Philadelphia beat the New Orleans Saints 24-21.
The Eagles (4-8-1) ruined Streak after missing four games and remaining out of reach in the NFC East.
The Saints (10–3) had won 8–0 the previous two seasons without Drew Breeze before running in the inspired Eagles. The loss dropped Sannyas to the No. 2 seed in the NFC behind Green Bay, but they have already secured a playoff berth.
Hurts was 30 to 17 years old at the start of his first career after replacing Carson Wentz. He faltered late in the fourth quarter. The 2019 Heisman Trophy runners-up season began as the third-third quarter. He was elevated to backup in Week 2 and took a few snacks each week until Vantz was dealt during a 30–16 loss at Green Bay last week.
Tamsom Hill was 28 of 38 for 291 yards, two TDS, one interception and was sacked five times by Pauly.
Sanders Brook slacked for an 82-yard TD in the second quarter, giving the Eagles a 17–0 lead. It was the fourth longest run in franchise history. Sanders has three runs of more than 70 yards since October. He had a 74-yard TD run against Pittsburgh and a 74-yard run against Baltimore.
The Saints had 98 total yards in the first half before going on their possession of the second half. Alvin Kamara ran a 5-to-65-yard drive to cut Philadelphia’s lead to 17-7.
Philadelphia lost cornerback Darius Slay and safety Rodney McLeod on the same play before scoring Kamara. Both were preparing for the play.
The Saints took advantage on the next drive when Hill delivered a 37-yard TD pass to Emanuel Sanders, who beat Kevonne Seymour, who was playing his first game for the Eagles.
New Orleans had a chance to take the lead, but came through Philadelphia’s defense. On fourth-and-2 from the Eagles 42, Josh Sweat Strip sacked Hill and Jevon Hargrave recovered. Philadelphia again grounded it and Sanders ran away 1 to make it 24-14.
The Eagles were trying to run out the clock when Hurts stumbled near midfield. Hills connected with Jarid Cook, with TD passes from 20 yards to get the Saints within 24-21.
But Philadelphia recovered the onside kick.
Hurts threw a 15-yard TD pass to Alshon Jeffrey on fourth-and-2, giving the Eagles a 7-0 start in the second quarter. Jeffrey took two catches in four matches this season, giving Philadelphia a rare edge before Hurts threw back-shoulder.
Kamara’s hands bounced after Duke Riley intercepted Hill’s pass, with Jake Elliott scoring a 44-yard field goal for a 10–0 lead. This was only the fourth pick for Philadelphia this season.
Wilt Lutz missed a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Hurts and Sanders are the first quarterback / running back combination since Donovan McNab and Deuce Staley in 2002 for each run for 100 yards in a single game for the Eagles.
Santa: All Nick Easton was evaluated for a conclusion.
Eagles: Slay (head) and McLeod (knee) survived the third quarter. CB Avonet Maddox (knee) survived the first half.
Santa: Kansas City will host the Chiefs (12-1) on Sunday.
Eagles: Visit the Arizona Cardinals (7-6) on Sunday.
