ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Peyton Ramsey threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score, and the No. 14 Northwestern defense earned a 35–19 win over Auburn at the Vrbo Citizen Bowl on Friday.
Ramsay, a graduate transfer, ran for a total of 291 yards and 50 yards to Northwestern (7-2), which won its fourth straight Bowl game. Touchdown catches were caught for the Wildcats by Raumud Chiyokhiao-Brown, John Raine and Riley Lees, who bounced back from an ugly loss to Ohio State on December 19 in the Big 10 championship game.
Bo Knicks threw for 292 yards to Auburn (6-5), but was often disappointed by Northwestern’s defense, which allowed 15.5 points of play, placing fifth in the nation. Auburn was led by interim coach Kevin Steele. Several key players were missing after the December 13 shooting of Gus Malzan.
The Tigers got within 14–13 when the Knicks hit Eliza Canyon for a 57-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. But Ramsey ran a 30-yard touchdown delay in the third quarter.
Linebacker Paddy Fisher, the nation’s active leader in the game, the Knicks had no advantage over fourth-and-1 on their second play of the fourth quarter. Cam Porter had seven carts in the ensuing drive, including a 1-yard plunge into the end zone that put Northwest comfortably ahead 28-13. The Wildcats offense finished with 457 yards and 25 first downs.
