Columbia, SC (AP) – South Carolina A state health official said 450 deaths could be prevented in the next three months.
During a Saturday news conference, the Department of Health and Environmental Control announced the interim public health director Drs. Bronn Traxler emphasized the importance of wearing masks to slow down the virus, even as vaccines for COVID-19 have started making their way into the state.
“I want everyone to remember this when we’re vaccinated, which all countrymen agree will take a few months to cater to the entire population, I really encourage people to do the work that we Know that it is very easy to work, such as wearing a mask, ”Traxler said.
He said the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation model showed that wearing statewide masks could result in the deaths of 450 people between now and April 1.
More than 4,200 cases of COVID-19 were reported on Saturday, totaling 287,776 statewide.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control also announced 84 more deaths, bringing the total number of states to at least 4,968. About 2,000 people are still hospitalized with the virus.
South Carolina lawmakers questioned the speed of the state’s coronavirus vaccine rollout on Thursday, even as health officials said they are vaccinating people faster than the rest of the country.
As of Saturday, Traxler said 41,508 doses of the vaccine had been administered. Those doses are going to people living and working in long-term care facilities in the early stages of the state, and healthcare workers.
“Our goal is to save lives and ensure that anyone who wants to get vaccinated will be vaccinated,” Traxler said.
Nevertheless, she noted that the state had, by now, received limited doses of the vaccine.
“Please be patient and wait for your turn.” We are making sure that the most vulnerable people get vaccinated first and as the supply increases, so will the people expanding, “she said. Step up and retreat until your turn in the plan. “
