Michigan City, Ind. (AP) – A correctional officer is killed and a second prisoner is seriously injured after an alleged attack on Sunday by a prisoner, Indiana The state police said.
The attack happened in Indiana State Jail Michigan At 2:40 pm in the city, the agency said in a news release.
State police said 38-year-old Timitri Campbell faces several primary charges including murder.
Authorities said the officers were attacked in a common area.
Officers were rushed to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, where one was pronounced dead and the other was listed in critical condition. He was not immediately recognized.
Detectives from the Indiana State Police Lowell Post were assisting in the investigation at the jail, 34 miles (55 kilometers) west of South Bend.
Wis-TV reported that Campbell is serving a 130-year sentence after pleading guilty to three murders in the 2002 shooting. In a 2007 appeal, he apologized for “being there” at the time of his death but said he did not kill anyone.
